Holiday dinner, and spot the frog

The holidays are upon us - and some of you will already have had several important holidays such as Thanksgiving or Hanukkah. Here in the Northern Hemisphere the days are now getting very short and temperatures have plummeted, making a cozy dinner with loved ones more attractive than ever. Or, if you are down under and hitting the middle of summer, what better than a long evening dinner on the terrace?

To help you entertain I have lots of table services. There is nothing like a beautifully laid table; the way we feed our senses during dinner contributes the quality of our togetherness and conversations. During these moments, new horizons are opened and important memories are made. Our 19th Century forefathers understood this, and that's why they paid so much attention to their tableware.

You may know that I love dessert services. I have so many different ones on offer, and always love seeing them go to a good home where they will be appreciated. All are beautiful on display and some are also excellent for use. I know that many of my clients will display their services all year and then take them out once or twice a year to be used; that's a sensible way to enjoy them fully but also carefully preserve them for generations to come.

Today I am showing a wonderful part-dessert service made by Spode in about 1828. I love the deep purple colour in two different shades, and have a look at that fantastic pattern. It is called the frog pattern - can you spot the frog? Spode produced this pattern in many different colourways. The outline was printed, and then the colours and gilding were filled in by hand.

This service has had one restoration; one of the handles to the central comport has been restored. But it can still be used as the food would not reach to the restored area. Some plates have some crazing, so they could discolour if used; however if you don't mind the risk of some discolouration what's to stop you from enjoying them? The nature of these decorations is that they don't come off easily so this makes it much easier to use and wash up (which of course needs to happen by hand, never in the dishwasher).

Where to find things

You can find this dessert service alongside all my other dessert services here, and all my available stock is here. If you always want to see the latest additions, follow me on Instagram... I post pictures and a story several times a week.
