Be my Valentine
It's going to be Valentine's Day! And did you need any last-minute gifts? I've made a special page for small gifts for him or for her, you can click here.
But where does Valentine's Day come from? Saint Valentine of Rome was an early Christian priest who was imprisoned and martyred in the year 269, when Christians were still persecuted by the Romans. Apparently during his imprisonment he restored sight to the daughter of his prison guard, and as a result Pope Gelasius made him a Saint and nominated 14 February as his name day.
In the late Middle Ages courtly love was very fashionable, and that is when Valentine became associated with romantic love. Later in 18th Century Britain this became a new fashion and people would hand-write letters and poems to each other to express their romantic feelings. For many years Valentine's Day remained either a Christian name day that was celebrated for Valentine's good deeds, or a British/American tradition for love birds, but in recent decades it has become a universal tradition of giving each other gifts, taking your loved one out for dinner, or writing a card.
Do you need a last-minute gift? There is still time to ship; shipping within the UK takes only 48 hours, to Europe and the US it can be done within a week, although to Australia and East Asia it may take longer. If you can't work out your perfect solution from this page, please contact me for advice. But if you need it shipped, please act quickly.
And if you thought there are only pink gifts for the ladies, look carefully... I've mixed in plenty of wonderfully masculine pieces.
