This is a rare and stunning set of 6 plates decorated by the Atelier Feuillet in Paris between 1817 and 1834.

Jean-Pierre Feuillet was born in 1777 as the son of the pastry chef for the Prince de Condé. The prince ran a school in his chateau outside Paris in Chantilly, and Jean-Pierre learned to paint there. In 1814 he set up his own porcelain decoration studio at the Rue de la Paix, under protection of the Prince. Later his nephew extended this with a second studio nearby in the Impasse Sandrié. They used blanks from several Paris porcelain factories, including the famous Nast and Darte Frères factories. The Atelier Feuillet would grow out to one of the best porcelain decoration shops in France, specially appointed as suppliers to the aristocracy, and churning out huge quantities of top-quality table ware, vases and other decorative items.

This set of plates could have been fired in two different factories as two of the plates are slightly heavier than the other four, however they are a good match. They are decorated in the Sèvres style with a deep "French green" or "fond vert" rim with raised gilding and three small reserves with flowers; each plate has a larger flower bouquet in the centre.

All plates are marked with the hand written gilt Feuillet mark that was used between 1817 and 1834; it is likely that this service was from between 1825 and 1834.

CONDITION REPORT Four plates are in perfect antique condition; one plate has a small chip at 11 o'clock, and one plate has suffered a break on the rim that was neatly although not invisibly repaired and touched up. All plates look fresh and bright and there is hardly any rubbing.

Antique porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!
