The many imari patterns of Wileman – 1899

Charles Wileman was big on Imari patterns, there are so many that you get dizzy if you try to count and distinguish them. The Japanese Imari tradition went though a British revival when Japan restored its trade links to Britain in 1854. It inspired a whole generation of chinaΒ designers to create their own English versions of this traditional pattern of flowers set in geometric patterns. With this one, you can see that it is close to the turn of the Century: the pattern is a little more geometric and abstract, adding a more modern feel to the ancient concept. You can find the listing here in my Antiques shop.
