Elegant Victorian – Samuel Johnson, 1890s

The reason I love this Samuel Johnson teapot from the 1890s is that it is both very homely and incredibly sophisticated. Made of humble ironstone in a very simple shape, it has a very beautiful Imari-inspired decoration with Victorian garlands and all. This is the charm of the Victorian era: while some items are obviously for the super-wealthy, others are so homely and heartwarming. This pot makes you warm even looking at it, and it is wonderful to use. It has some heavy crazing but apart from that there is no damage or wear. And to be honest, the crazing only makes it more charming. You can find the listing here in my Antiques shop.
